Relations between countries
The diplomatic relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Malta were established on January 9, 1995.
On 23 February, 2006 Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Republic of Malta Emil Karimov (with residence in Rome) within his first visit to the Republic of Malta presented his letter of credentials to the President of the Republic of Malta HE Dr. Edward Fenech-Adami and discussed with the Maltese President various aspects of cooperation between two countries.
During the visit Ambassador Emil Karimov also had meetings with high ranked officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Tourism of the Republic of Malta.
On January 19, 2007 Ambassador Emil Karimov visited Malta to take part in the traditional New Year celebration arranged for the heads of foreign diplomatic missions accredited in this country. Ambassador Emil Karimov met with the President of Malta Edward Fenech Adami to convey congratulations and best wishes from the President of Azerbaijan. Then, the heads of diplomatic missions met with the country’s Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and Foreign Minister Michael Frendo.
On January 11-12, 2008 Ambassador Emil Karimov visited Malta to take part in the traditional New Year celebration arranged for the heads of foreign diplomatic missions accredited in this country. Ambassador Emil Karimov met with the President of Malta Edward Fenech Adami, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and Foreign Minister Michael Frendo. Also, during the visit Ambassador Emil Karimov participated in the official euro celebrations on the occasion of Malta’s new membership to the Eurozone.
On January 16, 2009 Ambassador Emil Karimov visited Malta to take part in the traditional New Year celebration arranged for the heads of foreign diplomatic missions accredited in this country. Ambassador Emil Karimov met with the President of Malta Edward Fenech Adami, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and Foreign Minister Tonio Borg.
On April 4, 2009 Ambassador Emil Karimov visited Malta to take part in the ceremony of inauguration of the new President of Malta, George Abela.
On June 9, 2009 the reception on the occasion of the National Day - Republic Day was organized in Malta by the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The President of the Republic of Malta H.E. George Abela, ministers, members of the Parliament, representatives of science, business and media, as well as the diplomatic corps, all attended the reception. President Abela and the Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan Emil Karimov delivered a speech. During the reception, guests had a chance to watch a movie about Azerbaijan, enjoy national music and taste national cuisine. In conclusion, the books and brochures about Azerbaijan were distributed among the guests.
On January 14-15, 2010 Ambassador Emil Karimov visited Malta to take part in the traditional New Year celebration arranged for the heads of foreign diplomatic missions accredited in this country. Ambassador Emil Karimov met with the President of Malta George Abela, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and Foreign Minister Tonio Borg. Also, during the visit Ambassador Emil Karimov met with the Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, Mr. Mario de Marco. At the meeting, issues of cooperation between Azerbaijan and Malta in the field of tourism were discussed.
On May 12-14, 2010 Ambassador Emil Karimov made a visit to Malta. During the visit Ambassador E. Karimov met with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malta H.E. Dr. Tonio Borg, Parliamentary Secretary Dr. Chris Said, Rector of the University of Malta Prof. Juanito Camilleri, Director of MEDAC Prof. Stephen Calleya, Permanent Secretary of the Office of the Prime Minister Mr. Peter Portelli, Director General of The Chamber of Commerce of Malta Mr. Kevin Borg, Senior Principal of National Library of Malta Ms. Joanne Sciberras and members of the Parliament. Issues of bilateral cooperation were discussed in the course of the meetings.
On June 8, 2010 the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan with Malta’s Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry joinly organized the "Country Presentation Azerbaijan" in Valletta. During the event Ambassador Emil Karimov, the President of the Malta Chamber of Commerce Helga Ellul and other officials delivered their speeches to the representatives of the business community of Malta.
